A Beginner's Guide to Search Engine Placement and Ranking

ABSTRACT:

Have a Web site but no visitors? Want to learn how to create a Web site or edit your existing one so that it gets listed on the Search Engines? This straightforward and practical book will teach you the skills you need to know as well as the methods you need to avoid in order for Search Engines to read your Web site and list it effectively.

Michael Roebuck offers a fresh approach. This book is designed for the beginner and uses language that a beginner or an expert will understand. It's the fastest, easiest way to gain the skills you need.

ISBN: 0-7414-0463-X ©2000

Please note that while the book is still for sale however, the search engines change so frequently, that much of the information is outdated. I would need to update the book every month to keep it fresh. As much as I would like to do this, I am unable to devote the time needed to keep this book updated.

Take A Sneak Peak:

Spamming

Also called "spamdexing." Basically anything that is deceiving to the search engines is called spam. Trying to deceive the viewer, for example, creating a Web site optimized for the keyword, "Kids Internet Games" and actually taking you to a pornography site is spam.

Don't do it. Search engines are smarter than you think. If you think you know a good "trick" to get listed, I guarantee others have already tried it and the search engines are aware of it. The best method is to be honest and create relevant pages. You'd be surprised how effective simply being honest and legitimate can be! The following are a few different methods of spamming. I suggest you avoid them at all costs.

Keyword Stuffing
You might have heard that listing your keyword multiple times at the bottom of your Web page will enable you to rank higher. That is old news and is wrong. Search engines can determine this and will not rank your page. This is a form of spamming the search engines and they will drop your listings.

Invisible Text
Invisible text is text on your page that is the same color as your background. Search engines can determine if you are using white text with a white background or any other colors. Don't put extra text, headlines, links, etc. in the same color as your background.

Tiny Text
Any text on your page that is too small to read. Some people repeat keywords over and over at the bottom of the page in very small text. Some search engines will not list you if you are doing this.

Multiple Title Tags
Placing multiple title tags in the meta area of your Web page. Stick with one title tag, one keyword tag, and one description tag.

Code Swapping
also called "Bait & Switch." Bait & Switch occurs when you submit one page to the search engine for ranking. After the search engine ranks you in the directory, you immediately replace the page with another. The replaced page could be relevant to the original page listed or something different altogether. Search engines prevent this method by re-visiting pages regularly. If the search engine notices the page has changed, it will re-rank it.

Yahoo Store Made Easy

Recognizing the need for a Yahoo Store! website design tutorial, Pelican Productions along with Michael Roebuck began production on Ystore Made Easy! in early 2002. With the joint efforts of All Web Promotion, Michael Roebuck (and permission from Yahoo Inc.) over 800 hours was devoted to the creation of a CD-video tutorial.

The result, the 3 CD-video series “Ystore Made Easy!” the best resource for anyone wanting to build or customize a Yahoo Store! This 3 CD-Video set covered the intial Test drive, The Front-end and the Back-end of your Yahoo Store. This was the first and only training video of it's kind for Yahoo. We have not created a video series for Merchant Solutions as of yet.
